Sunday Discipleship for Adults

Deepening Our Discipleship: Growing in Faith and Friendship
Jesus used a vital and important word for those who followed him: Disciple. The word simply means learner, student, apprentice. Discipleship, that lifelong process of growing and learning, has to do with everyday matters and ordinary challenges. It keeps us thinking about trying to live faithfully in the culture in which we live. And it has to do with deepening our friendship with fellow learners. On this page and throughout the website, note significant, even life-changing offerings for children, youth, and adult disciples.

Will the Next Generations Have Faith? Habits that Support Family and Community Life
Led by the Rev. Leigh Spruill • Hampton Hall
Begins September 5th.
Many of us feel anxiety about how well church and family do at forming faith in our young people. In an age of ever-present pop media, how can we better pass along our faith to children and youth? How do we create a climate in our church and our homes where values become contagious? How do we ourselves grow spiritually so that we have more to share? Such questions matter for parents, of course, but also an entire church community—from godparents to aunts to granddads. This class will explore insights from the Book of Acts and leading cultural commentators to ask, “How do we articulate the hope and faith within us to our next generation and the world’s?” Each class will also feature a five-minute practical “habit” that will point to ways to disciple children from cradle to adulthood.
ETC: Ethics, Theology, and Conversation
Led by Shirley Hercules • Conference Room
Begins September 5th.
ETC is a round table, open discussion of theological, spiritual, and ethical issues. Each semester a topic is chosen, based either on a book or on materials collected and presented by members. Examples of discussion topics that have been covered include religion as it relates to science, church/state issues, terrorism and God’s will, the early Christian Church and the east/west split, and the Anglican Vision (a book in the Anglican teaching series).
The Gospel in Everyday Life:
A Bible Study on the Book of James
Led by Paul Hart and Lay Team • Dandridge B
Begins September 5th.
This informal, discussion-driven class will look at James, the New Testament book that is full of practical advice for wholesome and fulfilling living. “Be doers of the word, and not just hearers,” writes James in one of his most-quoted verses. What does it mean to have faith but also live with integrity?
God Is Closer Than You Think
Led by the Rev. Marcia King and Karlene Roberts • Dandridge A
September 5th — October 10th
Imagine Michelangelo’s great painting of God and Adam which graces the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. God is reaching out vigorously toward man while Adam hangs back just a little. This picture reminds us that God may be closer than you think. Is having a personal relationship with God more than just words? Can we really know God? Intimacy with God can happen right now if you want it. A closeness you can feel and a reality you can experience for yourselves.
Based on the book by the same name, we will explore the ways in which we can complete the connection with God. What are you waiting for?
The book will be available soon in the church office.
If You Want to Walk on Water, You Have to Get Out of the Boat
Led by the Rev. Marcia King and Joe Woodfin • Dandridge A
October 17th — November 21st
You’re one step away from the adventure of a lifetime. Deep within you lies the same faith and longing that sent Peter walking across the wind-swept Sea of Galilee toward Jesus. In what ways is the Lord telling you, as he did Peter, “Come”? What is it like to be just outside your comfort zone? Out on the risky waters of faith, Jesus is waiting to meet you in ways that will change you forever, deepening your character and your trust in God. The experience can be terrifying. But it is also thrilling beyond belief. The choice is yours to know him as only a water-walker can, aligning yourself with God’s purpose for your life in the process. There’s just one requirement: If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat.
The book is available now in the church office.
