Sunday Discipleship for Adults

Deepening Our Discipleship: Growing in Faith and Friendship

Jesus used a vital and important word for those who followed him: Disciple. The word simply means learner, student, apprentice. Discipleship, that lifelong process of growing and learning, has to do with everyday matters and ordinary challenges. It keeps us thinking about trying to live faithfully in the culture in which we live. And it has to do with deepening our friendship with fellow learners. On this page and throughout the website, note significant, even life-changing offerings for children, youth, and adult disciples.

Sunday Classes for 2009-10

Rector’s Forum: Conversations with Culture: Engaging the Questions from Christian Perspective

Led by The Rev. R. Leigh Spruill
Johnson Hall

The aim of this course is to help participants think through the presuppositions that underlie many cultural ideas, trends, and practices from a Christian perspective. Our classes will wrestle with first order questions for our day: What is a worldview? Why do we think the way we think about cultural realities? Is the lens through which we view the contemporary world built of Christian revelation and truth? What is revelation and truth? What is it to be human? We will examine these vital questions through a lively engagement with literature, film, music, technological and social trends, moral theology, and occasional guest speakers.

Christ-Centered Marriage Seminar

The Rev. Tony Welty and Lay Leaders
Hampton Hall

This class is an 8-session seminar on how to build and maintain a healthy, Christ-centered marriage.  Whether you are soon-to-be-married, newly married, married for many years or anywhere in-between, your relationship can benefit from an extended study and consideration of the three primary factors in sustaining a healthy marriage: communication, conflict resolution and forgiveness.  This Sunday morning offering will take the shape of a seminar in which each session contains a lecture-style teaching, light small group discussion and a take home exercise.  In addition, each couple will have the opportunity to learn about and consider joining a Homebuilders Couples Group by the end of the 8 weeks.  Please contact the Rev. Tony Welty at 385-2150 x 215 for further information.

Confirmation & Inquirers Class

Led by The Rev. Tim Jones and Seawell & Marcy Brandau
Dandridge A & B

Are you interested in learning more about the Episcopal Church or are you considering joining St. George’s through Confirmation?  This class series will help you meet others interested in learning about our Anglican heritage and the Episcopal Church and will prepare you for Confirmation Sunday with Bishop Bauerschmidt on May 16th.  Topics in the series include: “The Story Line of the Bible,” “Navigating the Book of Common Prayer,” “The Genius of the Episcopal Middle Way,” and “Why We Do What We Do in Worship.”  Although this class series is designed for people who are considering joining St. George’s Church through confirmation or reception or reaffirmation of faith, we also welcome confirmed members who are interested in a “refresher” in Episcopal life.  For more information, contact the Rev. Tim Jones at 385-2150 x 217 or Seawell and Marcy Brandau at 352-4824.

Ethics, Theology and Conversation (ETC)

Shirley Hercules Conference Room

ETC is a round-table, open discussion of theological, spiritual, and ethical issues. Each semester a topic is chosen, based on either a book or materials collected and presented by members. The class will focus on wide range of ethical issues.

Sitting with God

The Rev. Roger Senechal
Choir Loft behind Church Altar

Are you in need of some quiet time with God? Sitting With God offers a time for quiet listening to God, as well as a time for spontaneous vocal prayer if anyone feels led by the Spirit to do that.  Oftentimes nothing is said during our “quiet time,” yet communication with God is surely happening. This offering is not just for “advanced Christians”; it is for anyone of any age who wants to be quiet before the Lord and enjoy His Presence—hence the name “Sitting With God.” Sitting With God is open to occasional visitors as well as to regulars. For more information, contact The Rev. Roger Senechal at 428-5422.
