NEW Lenten Series
Deepening Your Faith Through Music
March 3 - 24 at 6:15pm
Johnson Hall
Led by Dr. Mark Ring
This Lent our Director of Music, Dr. Mark Ring, will present an adult Christian Discipleship class on Wednesday evenings at 6:15 pm. Our Director of Music Ministries, Dr. Mark Ring, will present a class during Lent examining how great music
can break open spiritual truths in new ways. Each class will include a couple of musical examples, each of which will be heard in the class. Dr. Ring will speak briefly about the pieces, their composers, and the context for which they were written and lead the group in exploring how these pieces embody and communicate spiritual meanings in ways that words alone could not. The class will also include directed discussion and end with suggestions for how participants can “take home” the insights explored in the class. You do not need to be a musician to get full benefit from this class. It is designed for anyone with an interest in exploring expressions of spirituality and who appreciates music. The music to be explored includes Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and Cantata 140; the Brahms Requiem; African- American Spirituals; Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir; Barber’s Prayers of Kierkegaard; and others.
Counterfeit Gods
March 3 - 24 at 6:15pm
Dandridge B
Led by the Rev. Leigh Spruill
A book study on Timothy Keller’s New York Times best-selling book, Counterfeit Gods, will be led by the clergy. Keller has a profound gift for making insights from the Bible and the Christian faith relevant to daily life. The book’s bracing exploration of how we turn everyday goods into substitute gods and admirable things into objects of devotion makes it a perfect study for Lent. Reading brief chapters assigned each week will be helpful but not required for attendance. The book is available in our own bookstore and in all the other normal book sales channels. The Rev. Leigh Spruill will lead off the study on February 24th.
