Frequently Asked Questions About St. George's

FAQs
What times are regular services? Are the services different?During the regular program year (approximately Labor Day through Memorial Day) we have three morning Sunday services. Our early service on Sunday is at 7:30 a.m. It is a communion service without choir or other music. The major services are at 8:45 a.m. with Rite II (more contemporary language) and 11:15 a.m. with Rite I (more formal and traditional in tone). These two services feature glorious choral music. There is also a communion service early Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m. During summer months we have just two morning services at 7:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. The evening Sunday service continues in summer months. In addition, we conduct Holy Eucharist in the Chapel Monday through Saturday at 7:00 a.m. There is also a Wednesday morning Eucharist in the Chapel with Healing Prayers at 10 a.m. The Chapel remains open 24/7 for private prayers.
Is nursery or childcare available?
We provide nursery (infants through two-year-olds) for most church events and for all Sunday morning services. Childcare (ages 3-5) is available during the 8:45 a.m. church service on Sunday (or the 10:00 a.m. combined church service during the summer). Childcare is also offered for many church events. Often parents and children worship together at 8:45 and then go to their respective Christian formation programs at 10:05.
Both nursery and childcare are located in the children’s education part of the building. Just follow the signs to Kindergarten/Nursery or ask one of the greeters available before each service for directions.

Where do enroll my children in Sunday School? What time is Sunday School?
St. George’s Sunday School program is called Christian Formation and is held regularly from 10:05 – 11:00 during the regular program year (Labor Day through Memorial Day). Classes meet on the first and second floor of our Christian education wing. You may also email our Director of Children's Christian Formation, Joanna Williams or call her at 385-2150, Ext. 243 for more information. She will be glad to explain our Christian education offerings for children and, if you’d like, give you a tour of the facilities. Information is also available on our children's page.
What is the youth program like?
Please visit St. George's Youth Page to see thriving youth ministry. Our youth director is Christy Beesley, and we have classes on Sunday mornings for grades six through twelve as well as a full calendar of programs and events throughout the year. The youth program remains very active throughout the summer, and our youth ministry team makes a special effort to stay in touch with our college students. Please feel free to email Christy or call her at the church at 385-2150. You can also contact Kay Neal, our Youth Programs Coordinator at youthprograms@stgeorgesnashville.org.
What about adult Christian education?
We offer a variety of classes during the 10:05 – 11:00 Sunday school hour and throughout the week as outlined on our Adult Christian education web page. We also offer programming series seasonally for adults and children on Wednesday nights. Dinner is included, and the programs are always noted on the calendar on our home page.
How do I become a member at St. George’s? How do I transfer my records?
If you are coming to us from an Episcopal background, you can call our Parish Secretary at 385-2150 (or email her at rebecca.teel@stgeorgesnashville.org) and ask her to contact your previous church to transfer your membership. If you come from a tradition other than Episcopal, Catholic, or Orthodox, we request that you attend our Confirmation classes and be confirmed when our bishop makes his annual visit in the Spring. Click here for more information on joining St. George’s.
Do you have a children’s choir?
Yes. St. Dunstan’s Choir trains youngsters in church music and performance (boys and girls grades three and up; boys with unchanged voices). We also have a Youth Choir for older children.
I used to sing in the choir, but I’m not a trained or professional singer. Could I sing in the choir here?
Dr. Murray Forbes Somerville is our Director of Music, and he loves to speak with people interested in the choir! Please feel free to call him at 385-2150, ext. 254, or email him
How do I get involved at St. George’s?
St. George’s has a very active, hands-on Newcomers’ Committee. Once you complete the Visitor/Newcomer Guest Book (link to Visitor/Newcomer Guest Book) on the web or fill out a pew card during church, a member of the Newcomers’ Committee will contact you and take you under his/her wing. The committee member will be available to answer any questions you might have and help you find your niche at St. George’s. Our Coordinator of Lay Ministries, Lynn Ragland, also is available to answer any questions you might have about getting involved. You can call Lynn at 385-2150 or email her at lynn.ragland@stgeorgesnashville.org .
Newcomers’ dinner parties occur every few months, and all new members and visitors to the church in the past six months are invited. You also will note that members of St. George’s wear nametags; a form is available in the back of the church for you and your family. Fill it out and your nametag will appear the next week!
Visit our Parish Life/Fellowship, Outreach, and Pastoral Care web pages on this site to find more opportunities to get involved. Or, simply send an email to volunteer@stgeorgesnashville.org and tell us where your interests lie!
Could I speak with a priest?
Absolutely. We invite you to call the church office at 385-2150 to make an appointment with one of our clergy. Or, you can email pastoralcare@stgeorgesnashville.org.
