75th Anniversary: Leigh Spruill
The Rev. Dr. R. Leigh Spruill served as a guest preacher for our 75th Anniversary Preaching Series at 8:45am in the Nave.
The Rev. Dr. R Leigh Spruill is a native of Tappahannock, Virginia and attended The Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA. He earned his undergraduate degree from UNC (Chapel Hill), a Master of Divinity from Sewanee’s School of Theology, and a Doctor of Ministry from Wycliffe College in Toronto.
Leigh served as our faithful rector for 16 years before being called to serve as rector at St. John the Divine in Houston. He arrived in this parish in 2005 to a congregation newly energized around outreach, and Leigh organized us further with a new strategic plan and mission statement: “to receive, live, and share the abundant life of Jesus Christ.” He led us through multiple challenging seasons, notably the 2010 flood and early days of the 2020 pandemic. It was also during his tenure that major new church initiatives were formed, including The Table, St. George’s Enterprise Ministry, the formation of our arts ministry, and the vision to launch the Living Our Legacy Capital Campaign.
Leigh is married to the lovely Susalee, and you all remember their three children, who are now all grown: Eleanor, Peter, and William. They are also new grandparents to baby August.
Leigh’s passions include poetry, oysters, golf, and cheering UNC sports from afar! A lifelong baseball enthusiast, he is one of the Houston Astros’ newest big fans.
