At the beginning of every baptism service, we name hope as one of the gifts of being united to Christ in baptism, when we all say together, “There is one hope in God's call to us.” Our hope is found in God's promise that death itself will meet its end, and God will have the final word. This dimension of baptism, hope found in Christ even in the face of death, hit home for me during the very first baptism I performed.
